Every drawing class you take, you need to practice sketching a sphere (in a darkroom with one light source). This is my favorite drawing exercise. I think about lightness and darkness every time. The darkest dark is not behind the sphere, instead, it is in the shadow, a small area that receive no light or reflection of the light.
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
John 1:5
I start to imagine little people around the sphere. Getting out of the shadow to cling on the sphere is a leap. Climbing on the sphere to get to the brightest spot takes hard work.
